Political Scientists Reflect on Cambodia's Victory Day
AKP Phnom Penh, January 07, 2025 --
As Cambodia commemorates the 46th anniversary of the Victory Day over the Genocidal Regime (Jan. 7, 1979 - Jan. 7, 2025), Cambodian political scientists weigh in on the spirit of the historical milestone to value and learn from.
Director General of the International Relations Institute of Cambodia Dr. Kin Phea, a political scientist, considered it as a new page to restore peace and development.
For every Cambodian, it was the day that they got their utmost right to life back after being deprived of it throughout the Khmer Rouge regime, he said, adding that all Cambodians are now entitled not only to the right to life but also to all kinds of rights and freedoms.
In terms of physical development, starting from complete destruction, Phnom Penh, as well as Cambodia at large, is home to, to name a few, schools, hospitals, pagodas, high-rise buildings, roads, bridges, and shopping malls—thanks to the hard work of the Royal Government.
Meanwhile, he continued, the government has sustained remarkable economic growth and set out aspirations to become an upper middle-income country by 2030 and a high-income country by 2050.
Cambodia is also actively integrating itself into regional and global frameworks and mechanisms while playing a key role in international affairs.
Secretary General of the Royal Academy of Cambodia Dr. Yong Pov, who is an expert on political science, called the day a fact in history for Cambodia and called on all the people to remember and learn from it so as to prevent the Khmer Rouge dark period from happening again.
Both Dr. Yong Pov and Dr. Kin Phea underscored that the denial of the efforts to topple the Khmer Rouge is the insult of priceless lives sacrificed for it and the denial of the fact.
