Herd of Rare Asian Elephants Spotted in Cardamom Mountains
AKP Phnom Penh, January 08, 2025 -- A herd of Asian elephants, including calves and their mothers, was recorded on the camera trap installed in the Central Cardamom Mountains Landscape.
A news release issued by the Ministry of Environment on Jan. 8 added that the three calves of the herd appeared to be in good health and their presence is a hope for the survival and reproduction of this rare species.
Asian elephants are listed as endangered species on the IUCN Red List, and their survival has been threatened by poaching and habitat loss worldwide.
There are an estimated 400 to 600 Asian elephants in Cambodia, most of which live in the Cardamom Mountains and the eastern part of Cambodia.
The Royal Government of Cambodia, in collaboration with Conservation International Cambodia, local communities, and partners, is implementing the REDD+ project in the central Cardamom Mountain landscape to safeguard wildlife, including the Asian elephants, and their habitat.
This initiative is made possible by the support of USAID Morodok Baitang, Procter and Gamble Company, and the Legacy Landscapes Fund.
