Cambodia Takes Pride in Hosting 20th Francophonie Summit 2026, Education Minister Says
AKP Phnom Penh, March 21, 2026 —
Cambodia takes “immense pride” in hosting the 20th Francophonie Summit in 2026, a landmark international event that will mark a rare gathering of French-speaking nations in Southeast Asia, Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister H.E. Dr. Hang Chuon Naron said.
The summit will be only the second of its kind held in the region in nearly three decades, following the first in 1997 in Hanoi, underscoring Cambodia’s growing role on the international stage.
Speaking at celebrations marking the International Day of La Francophonie 2026, H.E. Dr. Hang Chuon Naron said the event reflects Cambodia’s strong commitment and deep solidarity with the global Francophone community, particularly in engaging younger generations as drivers of development and the future of the French language.
The ceremony, co-chaired with Canadian Ambassador to Cambodia H.E. Christian DesRoches, was held under the theme “Generation of Peace? Youth Contributions to a More Peaceful World.” The Minister highlighted the role of youth as a key force in promoting peace, cultural exchange and sustainable development within the Francophone world.
H.E. DesRoches said the International Day of La Francophonie provides an opportunity to strengthen solidarity through cooperation among French-speaking countries, including Canada. He noted that such cooperation plays a crucial role in addressing contemporary challenges facing the Francophone community.
He added that during his diplomatic tenure in Cambodia, he has observed the widespread use of the French language across multiple sectors, and expressed confidence in further strengthening cooperation with Cambodia, as well as with the French embassy.
Separately, Mr. Yann Delauney, Director General of France Volontaires, highlighted ongoing volunteer exchange programmes between Cambodia and France. He said Cambodia has actively participated in sending volunteers each year, helping to strengthen ties among communities and youth within the Francophone network.
He expressed hope for sustained and long-term cooperation in expanding these exchanges.
