National Assembly Approves Amendment to Senate Election Law
AKP Phnom Penh, March 30, 2026 --
Cambodia’s National Assembly (NA) on Monday approved an amendment to the law on the election of Senate members.
All 112 lawmakers present at the 5th session of the NA’s 7th legislature, held at the NA Palace under the chairmanship of its President Samdech Maha Rathsapheathika Thipadei Khuon Sudary, voted for the proposed law on the amendment.
According to the NA General Secretariat’s press release, the amendment aims to strengthen the effectiveness of senators in fulfilling their representative roles, enhance accountability, and bring them closer to their electoral base and citizens at the grassroots level. It is intended to improve communication with constituents, better understand local concerns, and enable more effective performance of duties.
The proposed amendment consists of two articles. It was reviewed by the NA’s Commission on Legislation and Justice, with its findings presented by H.E. Ang Vong Vathana, Chairman of the commission. H.E. Dr. Thun Vathana, Second Vice President of the Senate, represented the signatory senators in defending the proposed law.
Besides, the lawmakers also unanimously passed a draft law on combating online scams aiming to strengthen digital security and better protect citizens from technology-based fraud, which has increasingly become a global concern.
During the same sitting, the NA President Samdech Khuon Sudary announced to close the 5th session of the 7th legislature.
In accordance with Article 83 of the Constitution and the Assembly’s internal rules, each session must last at least three months. The fifth session, which began on Nov. 28, 2025, exceeded this requirement.
