ASEAN Observer Team Visits O’Smach Border Area to Monitor Ceasefire Implementation
AKP Phnom Penh, May 23, 2026 --
The Cambodian Liaison Group (CLG) on Saturday facilitated a mission by the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) to observe, verify, and report on the border situation at the O’Smach International Border Checkpoint in Oddar Meanchey province.
According to a press release issued this afternoon by H.E. Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata, Spokeswoman of the Ministry of National Defence, the mission took place at 9:50 a.m. under the leadership of the Head of Mission of the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT HOM).
The mission also reviewed compliance with and implementation of all stabilisation measures outlined in the Joint Statement since the ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand came into effect.
The Royal Government of Cambodia reiterated its full support for the AOT and stressed the importance of strengthening the team’s role and mandate to ensure the full and effective implementation of the ceasefire and agreed measures between the two neighbouring countries.
According to the statement, Cambodia’s continued cooperation with the AOT reflects its commitment to promoting transparency, accountability, and mutual trust by welcoming friendly nations to assist in monitoring the situation along the border.
The Royal Government and the Ministry of National Defence reaffirmed Cambodia’s firm and sincere commitment to fully respect and implement the Joint Statement of the Third Special Meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee dated Dec. 27, 2025, the Joint Declaration on the Peace Agreement between Cambodia and Thailand dated Oct. 26, 2025, and all other relevant agreements.
The statement added that these efforts are aimed at ensuring rapid recovery and restoring normalcy, peace, stability, and security for people living along the border areas of both countries.
