Cambodia recorded a steady decline in fake news cases from May to July 2026, according to a report by the Ministry of Information’s Anti-Fake News Committee, the ministry’s spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said the downward trend coincided with the launch of the second phase of the Ministry of Information’s “Say No to Fake News” campaign in May.

A total of 583 fake news cases were recorded in May, before falling to 485 cases in June, a decrease of 16.8 percent. The figure declined further to 361 cases in July, representing a 25.5 percent drop from June and a 38 percent decrease compared with May.

The second phase of the campaign, launched on May 18, 2026, has contributed significantly to transforming social media users from “victims of fake news” into “proactive and responsible digital citizens,” the spokesperson said.

The campaign has helped strengthen public media and information literacy, particularly among young people, enabling them to better recognise the risks posed by fake news and misinformation.

Cambodian youth are increasingly playing an active role in protecting a safe information environment, safeguarding the right to access accurate information, and exercising freedom of expression ethically and responsibly within the framework of the law.

The campaign’s outreach and momentum have also expanded to the grassroots level across Phnom Penh and the provinces, encouraging greater public participation in countering harmful information and reducing the sharing of fake news.

The Ministry noted that young people in particular are increasingly adopting the practice of checking information sources and independently verifying content before believing or sharing information on social media.

The Ministry of Information will continue to strengthen relevant mechanisms and measures, including cooperation with stakeholders, development partners and educational institutions, to further promote information and media literacy among all segments of Cambodian society, the spokesperson said.
