The Banteay Meanchey Provincial Department of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, in collaboration with the O'Chrov District Administration, held an event Wednesday morning to mark National Fish Day (July 1), releasing thousands of mixed fish fingerlings into the Kanseng reservoir to raise public awareness and replenish natural aquatic resources.

The ceremony was led by Ms. On Sitha, acting Director of the Provincial Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, alongside the deputy governor of O'Chrov district, local authorities, armed forces personnel, technical officials, teachers, students, and community members.

Addressing the gathering, Ms. Sitha called on all stakeholders to unite in protecting, conserving, and sustainably managing fishery resources, emphasising that preserving fish stocks is a shared responsibility among all citizens rather than the duty of a single agency.

"Jointly protecting and conserving fishery resources is a valuable investment in the future to ensure the growth of our people's livelihoods and maintain the balance of the natural ecosystem for future generations," Ms. Sitha said, noting that abundant fisheries serve as the cornerstone of household economies and daily food security.

Beyond restocking the reservoir, organisers highlighted that National Fish Day acts as a vital educational platform to combat illegal fishing – particularly the use of destructive gear during the critical spawning season – while reinforcing the need to protect flooded forests and sanctuary zones essential for fish reproduction. Local officials expressed confidence that the release into Kanseng reservoir will rebuild native fish populations and inspire youth and residents to take an active role in long-term environmental stewardship.
